After graduating from Caldwell High School in 1953, Johnny worked at International Furniture and started his own shop doing upholstery for many others in the community. He served in the Army Reserve. Johnny was a faithful member of Lyons Evangelical Church for many years serving multiple terms as a council member and was always willing to volunteer where needed. Later, he found a home at the Burleson County Cowboy Church.
On July 7, 2003, he married Rita (O’Mary) Kovar and chose to father two more daughters to become one family. They enjoyed traveling, dancing, and spending time with friends and family.
Johnny also took pride in helping others. He worked on the family farm, ranching and gardening, for many years. He enjoyed playing dominoes, hunting, and fishing.
