Mr. Alton Daniel Machan

Mr. Alton Daniel Machan, 85, died on July 5, 2023, at his farm near Caldwell.

A graveside service was held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 8, 2023, at the New Tabor Cemetery under the direction of the Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Caldwell, Texas. Bro. Joseph Polasek of Snook Brethren Church officiated. A close friend from childhood, Joe Rychlik, led the music.

Alton was born October 17, 1937, in Burleson County, Texas, the eleventh child of John Jerry and Lydia Ann Hovorak Machann.

He graduated from Caldwell High School in 1955.

In his childhood, the family built the home and established the ranch he would own as an adult, working it for the rest of his life. There he enjoyed bird watching, reading, and studying the weather.

Alton was a member of the New Tabor Brethren Church, where his grandfather had been a founding elder.

He was beloved by his family; they will miss his humor and gift for storytelling.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Lydia Hovorak Machann; siblings, Frank (Stacy) Machann, Lidie Machann, John (Sophie) Machann, Lillian (Steve) Prazak, Lydia Rose (Don) Campbell, Edward Machan, Willie Machan, Julia Machan, Alvin Machan, Robert Machan; nephew, Glen Edward Machan; and niece, Nelda Vera Campbell.

Survivors include nephews, Clinton (Virginia) Machann, and Donald (Dessie) Campbell Jr.; niece, Janice (Fred) Nelson; great-nephews, Philip (Sally) Roscher with children, Charlotte and Aubrey, and James Roscher with Stephen, Brittany, Corbyn, Kaylyn and Connor; great-nieces, Casey (Josh) Akin, Alena (Kersten) Horn with sons, Marc and Mattis, Tessie (Tim) West with son, Cyril, and Sarah (John) Piel.

The family appreciates the staff of Traditions Hospice and has heartfelt gratitude for the long hours, responsible caregiving and companionship of his private care givers, past and present. To the end, Debra Cass was beside him, encouraging and patient; the family also owes considerable thanks to Gloria Willett, Natalie Mantle, Fausto Martinez, Bette Bell. The farm has run smoothly with the work of Brycen Johnagin, Benny Cass, and, earlier, Kenneth Bell.

Memorials may be given to the charity of your choice in Alton’s name.
