A private memorial service for Norma Joyce Calvin, 88, of Lake Jackson is planned at Providence Baptist Church in Caldwell.
She died peacefully on Monday, Sept. 13, 2021.
Joyce was born on Dec. 1, 1932, to J. O. “Bud” and Pauline Sloan in Hearne.
She graduated from Caldwell High School where she was F.F.A. Sweetheart, Miss Hornet, played the oboe in the band and was the drum majorette.
After graduating, Joyce worked at Texas A&M University, and then went on to work at the Burleson County Courthouse.
On Aug. 14, 1954, Joyce married her Junior High sweetheart, Cecil Calvin, who was serving in the U.S. Army, at the time.
After his discharge, Joyce and Cecil moved to Lake Jackson where Cecil worked for Dow Chemical Company and Joyce for Brazosport Independent School District, until her retirement in 1993 after 24 years.
Joyce was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Lake Jackson, where she taught Sunday school and had the occasional privilege to play the organ during church services.
She was a devoted wife and an amazing mother to her two daughters and her son.
Joyce enjoyed traveling, music and ceramics, but more than anything, she enjoyed spending time with her family.
Her gentle and kind spirit will be greatly missed by her family, but they are comforted by the Lord’s promise that they will be reunited with her in eternity. Until then, they will continue to give praise for her godly influence in their lives.
She was preceded in death by her father, J.O. “Bud” Sloan; and her mother, Pauline Sloan.
Joyce is survived by her husband of 67 years, Cecil Calvin; daughters, Cathy Calvin Cook and husband, Brent, and Karen Calvin Abbe and husband, Jeff; son, Kenneth Calvin and wife, Melanie; grandchildren, Michael Cook, Kelsey Cook, Courtney Cook, Adam Calvin and wife, Jamie, Russell Calvin and wife, Jessica; great-grandchildren, Cooper Calvin and Rachel Calvin; brother, Jim Sloan and wife, Denise; sister, Pat Holmgreen; and many nieces and nephews.
