CECIL CALVIN

A private memorial service for Cecil Calvin, 90, of Lake Jackson will be held at Providence Baptist Church in Caldwell.

Mr. Calvin died peacefully on Saturday, Oct. 16, 2021.

Cecil was born on Sept. 5, 1931, to Sam and Ida Calvin in Caldwell.

He graduated from Caldwell High School in 1951 where he played football, basketball, baseball, and was FFA President.

After graduation, Cecil moved to Freeport and began working for Dow Chemical Company as a machinist.

In 1953 Cecil entered the Army and served two years, stationed for the major portion of the time at Sandy Hook, New Jersey.

On Aug. 14, 1954, Cecil married his Junior High sweetheart, Norma Joyce Sloan, in Bryan.

Cecil was discharged from the Army in September 1955 and returned to Lake Jackson with his young family to continue working for Dow.

Cecil retired from Dow in 1995 with 42 years of service.

After retiring, Cecil enjoyed spending time at their cabin on Lake Striker in East Texas, where he loved to fish, tend to his beehives and work on his property.

He also enjoyed cooking, grilling, gardening, golfing, coin collecting, watching sports, tinkering in his garage and doting on his pets.

Cecil was a member of First Baptist Church in Lake Jackson where he and Joyce were kindergarten Sunday school teachers for many years.

He was a devoted husband, loving father and an amazing grandfather.

Cecil will be forever remembered for his quick wit, sense of humor and mischievous smile.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Joyce, whom he faithfully and lovingly cared for until her passing; his parents, Sam and Ida Calvin; his siblings, Alvada Jubenville, William Calvin, Rowena Lewis, Sammy Calvin, Ella Bea Fitts and Betty Davis.

Cecil is survived by his daughters, Cathy Calvin Cook and husband, Brent, and Karen Calvin Abbe and husband, Jeff; son, Kenneth Calvin and wife, Melanie; grandchildren, Michael Cook, Kelsey Cook, Courtney Cook, Adam Calvin and wife, Jamie, and Russell Calvin and wife, Jessica; greatgrandchildren, Rachel Calvin and Cooper Calvin; brother-in-law, Jim Sloan and wife, Denise; sister-in-law, Pat Holmgreen; and numerous nieces and nephews.
