A Mass of Christian Burial for Simon “Sam” Vasquez, 72, of Sugar Land, formerly of Somerville, was held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2021, at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Somerville with Father Joven Saavedra officiating.

Burial followed at Mt. Calvary Cemetery near Somerville.

Viewing was held from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 15, 2021, at Strickland Funeral Home Chapel in Caldwell. The Holy Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Military Honors were provided by VFW Post No. 4458 in Caldwell.

Mr. Vasquez died in Sugar Land.

Simon was born on Feb. 18, 1948, in Caldwell, Texas, to Ynez Vasquez and Demetria (Vasquez) Vasquez.

He married the love of his life, Rebecca (Lara), on Nov. 1, 1970, at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Giddings. To this union were blessed Marisela, Jessica, and Gabriela.

Sam was larger than life.

He served in the U.S. Navy, graduated from Texas A&M University, and worked and retired from the V.A. Hospital in Houston.

Simon was a member of the Texas Association of Sports Officials, and refereed high school basketball.

His other hobbies included gardening, taking his grandkids on adventures and watching Aggies football.

Simon’s favorite hobby was entertaining people with his music. He was Rocking Sam the DJ.

He was a loving husband, a great father, an amazing Popo, and a favorite uncle.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ynez and Demetria Vasquez; his brother, Lee Vasquez; and his brother-in-law, Bobby Taylor.

Sam is survived by his loving family and wife of nearly 51 years, Rebecca Vasquez; his daughters, Marisela Vasquez, Jessica Vasquez, and Gabriela Vasquez and Robert Lopez all of Sugar Land, Texas; his brothers, Victor Vasquez and wife, Sandra, of Stafford, Fidel Vasquez and wife, Mary-Helen, of Brenham, and Julian Vasquez and wife, Liz, of Somerville; his sisters, Jackie Villareal and husband, Rolando Villareal, of College Station, and Lupe Taylor of Staunton, Va.; and his grandchildren, Jaxon Vasquez, and Jaycee Vasquez of Sugar Land.
