Mass of a Christian Burial for Amelio Mendez, 101, of Caldwell, was held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2021, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Caldwell.
Visitation was held from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2021, at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Caldwell, with a Rosary recited at 6 p.m. with Father Melvin Dornak as the celebrant.
Burial followed the Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2021, at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.
Mr. Mendez died on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2021.
Amelio Mendez was born on May 30, 1919, in Fort Worth to Natividad and Sabina (Tabera) Mendez.
He was married to Mary Rosas on June 5, 1948.
Amelio was a hard worker and was raised on farms, so he did what he knew.
He was a farmer and rancher his whole life and was called upon by many neighbors to help out on their farms as well. His knowledge of farming was extensive and he loved to help others, family members said.
Amelio was a faithful servant of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus.
He enjoyed fishing and riding on his tractor.
Family was the most important thing in his life.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 68 years, Mary (Rosas) Mendez; his parents, Natividad and Sabina (Tabera) Mendez; his brothers, Victor Mendez, Lucio Mendez, Julian Mendez, and Tony Mendez; his sisters, Epifania Sanchez and Juana Jiminez; and his son-in-law, Freddy Martinez.
Amelio is survived by his sons, Amelio Mendez Jr. and wife, Maurine, and John David Mendez and friend, Evelyn Bower; his daughter, Kathy Marie Martinez and husband, Leslie Denton; 10 grandchildren, John Keith Mendez and wife, Anita, Amy Nicole Swik and husband, David, J. D. Mendez II, Christopher Lee Mendez, Daniel Sylvester Mendez and wife, Vanessa, Maria Nicole Crumely, Freddy Martinez Jr., Michael Kyle Martinez, Liza (Martinez) Vivero, and Melissa Mendez; five great-grandchildren, Victoria, Sierra, Cameron, Jordan, and Natalie; and eight greatgreat-grandchildren, Kendall, Roman Jr., Orlando, Zailyn, Julian, Maria, Sebastian, and Daniel.
