Leo Raymond Schubert, 95, of Lyons, passed away peacefully at his home on October 28, 2024.
Leo was born on September 1, 1929, to Charles and Ella Schubert in Lyons.
Beginning at the age of 16, he worked in various positions for the Santa Fe Railway Tie Treatment Plant, retiring in 1991 after 46 years.
He left this job briefly to proudly serve our country in the United States Army from 1951-1953 during the Korean War.
Leo met the love of his life, Evelyn Knesek, while attending school in Lyons in the late 1930s.
They married on October 14, 1948, at St. Anns Catholic Church, the church at which they attended for the remainder of their lives.
They made their home in Lyons, where they would live for the rest of their lives.
On November 21, 1957, Leo and Evelyn welcomed their only daughter, Janice Annette.
They recently celebrated their 76th wedding anniversary.
A hard worker all of his life, Leo worked multiple jobs in addition to his position at Santa Fe, including work for the Lyons Cotton Gin, chopping and selling wood, hauling hay, and multiple other jobs.
Leo and Evelyn’s first brand new car was purchased with money made from selling wood in the 1950s.
Later in life, when Leo was unable to work as hard physically, the nature of his work changed as he found a new interest in the stock market. He watched the markets very closely and enjoyed trading.
He continued to watch the markets through his illness and, two days before he passed, he was still instructing his family to make a trade for him!
Leo actively served his church in multiple ways, including as an Usher, an active volunteer for the annual St. Anns Stampede Rodeo, and through the Knights of Columbus.
In addition to serving his church, he was involved in management of the Schoppe Family cemetery for many years.
Leo was an incredibly kind and gentle man.
He loved his Lord and Savior, and cherished his family and friends, including his most recent title Grandpa and Great-Grandpa.
Leo was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Ella; daughter, Janice Schubert Crook; brothers, Emil Schubert, Aulton Schubert and wife, Dorothy, Charles Schubert and wife, Angela; sister, Velma Rathjen and husband, Edward.
