Luisa Pabla (Sanchez) Mendez was born on June 6, 1937 in Caldwell, Texas, to Esiquio and Agustina Sanchez, the eldest of eleven children born to her parents. Luisa was a life-long resident of Burleson County.
She married the love of her life, Antonio “Tony” Mendez, Sr., on May 2, 1964, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Caldwell.
Luisa and her husband loved to dance and listen to music. Their ideal weekend consisted of enjoying hamburgers on Saturday nights with their two sons, attending Mass, and barbecuing on Sundays with the family.
Luisa was a faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Caldwell her entire life.
She served as a Sacristan, Eucharistic Minister and a Homebound Eucharistic Minister for many years. In her youth, she and her sisters taught catechism classes at the church and helped with other ministries. Her faith in God, and her love for family, was the foundation of her life.
She was employed at Keller’s Ladder Plant in Caldwell until its closure and then in later years at Burleson Memorial Hospital.
She was well loved among her peers and will be deeply missed.
Luisa loved to crochet and knit, giving many of her crafts as presents to her family.
She enjoyed cooking and baking, making many of the traditional Mexican dishes including flour tortillas and sharing this knowledge with her family. Family members and friends looked forward to receiving her delicious homemade carrot cakes that made for them every Christmas.
Time with her beloved family was her greatest treasure.
Luisa enjoyed gardening, whether it was nurturing her flowers or growing strawberries. Her house was beautiful in the spring when her azalea bushes were in full bloom. She was often approached by Burleson County residents asking to have their picture taken with these beautiful blooms.
Her faith in God always shined bright in her radiant smile and love for others.
