Zapata, Chapman, Hughson win gold at Caldwell tournament

The Caldwell tennis team hosted only its second tournament at the high school in the history of the team and the second this spring season -- with the home team sweeping the titles in the boys’ singles and doubles events. The varsity tournament was held last Thursday.

Hornets lose three of four at Franklin Tournament

The Caldwell Hornets won one of four games last week at the Franklin Tournment -- falling to Fairfield, New Waverly and Cameron before defeating Lampasas in the final game. Caldwell fell to Fairfield 13-0 in game one, to New Waverly 10-2 in game two and Cameron 6-4 in game three.

Last Saturday at the Texas High School Powerlifting Association’s (THSPA) Region 4 Division 4 Championships, Conway lifted a total of 960 pounds to win the 132-pound weight class, qualifying him for the state meet later this month. And, his bench press of 250 pounds set the regional record.

Last week the pitching ace threw two no-hitters in district play: in a 10-0 home win over Normangee and in a 12-0 road win over Iola.

Beck, Cowan, Mathis win gold at Giddings

Caldwell’s Jacob Beck, Daniel Cowan and Ja’Asia Mathis all brought home gold from last Friday’s Buff Relays in Giddings. Beck won the boys’ 200-meter dash with a time of 22.37 -- over one full second ahead of Lockhart’s Josh Ramos at 23.62.

HPU softball sets new record for hits in a game

Near the end of February, the Howard Payne University softball team broke the school record for hits with 21 hits in game one of the Lady Jackets doubleheader sweep of the University of Dallas 15-10 and 13-7 in nonconference action.

CHS boys, girls take 2nd at Waller Tourney

The Caldwell boys and girls golf teams both placed second last week at the Waller Tournament at Sand Hill Farms Golf Course. The boys shot a team total of 355 behind Columbus. Grant McManus had a personal best round of 78, good enough for the best individual round of the day.

Tucker wins long jump at Bremond Tiger Relays

Somerville long jumper Dominic Tucker placed first at last week’s Bremon Tiger Relays. He won with a leap of 20-5 1/2. As a team, the Yeguas were fifth in the team standings with 66 points. Mart won the team title with a score of 140.

Yeguas split games last week, get first victory

The Somerville Yeguas fell to Bellville Faith Academy 12-1 last Friday and defeated Connection School of Houston 13-8 on March 7, both at home. Against FaithAcademy, the Yeguas, 1-6, trailed 6-0 before scoring in the bottom of the third inning.

Lady Jays 10-run rule Normangee, Iola

It only took five innings for Snook to 10run rule both Normangee and Iola to have go 2-0 in district last week. Snook ace Aubrey Becker threw no-hitters in both Snook wins. Last Tuesday, at home, Becker struck out 10 Normagee batters to lead the Lady Jays to a 10-0 home win.
