Maria Theresa Maldonado Alvarez, our beloved Theresa rejoiced into eternal peace on August 28, 2026, at the age of 80, after a long and courageous battle with illness.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale, with the Rosary following from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m.
A Christian Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rockdale.
She passed gently, wrapped in grace and carried by the promise she had spent her life proclaiming.
She was a woman whose entire life was a living testimony -- a true and faithful servant of God, devoted to sharing His word so others could witness His glory, His goodness and His everlasting love. Her voice, her presence and her unwavering faith became a ministry all its own. Her love extended far beyond her family.
She carried endless love for others, especially those who needed a voice, a champion or simply someone to stand beside them. She was a tireless advocate -- a woman who believed deeply in justice, dignity and compassion. She became a pillar of strength within the Hispanic community, speaking up, lifting others and ensuring that those who felt unseen were heard. Her advocacy was not loud -- it was steady, faithful and rooted in her belief that every person was a child of God, deserving of honor.
Her ministry was not only in words -- it was in action and in the countless hearts she touched.
Theresa was preceded in death by her parents, Francisco and Basilia Reyes Maldonado; her sister, Claver Patsy Esparza; her brother, Vincent Maldonado; her brother-inlaw, John Jessie Alvarez; and her sisters-in-law, Alberta Reyes, Teresa Zalmanek, Patricia Alvarez and Frances Alvarez.
She leaves behind to cherish and honor her memory her beloved husband of 45 years, Mark Alvarez, a partnership marked by shared faith and unconditional love. She was a devoted mother of two, one daughter, and one son, Antoinette and Michael (Laura). She was blessed with four grandchildren, Gabriella, Alejandro, Arianna and Diego, each one, individually, was so very precious to her. She held them close every single day, in heart and in prayer. “There was no greater love than Nana love.”
She also walked through life with two cherished best friends, who stood beside her faithfully, Dolores Masiel and San Juana Estrada, both of Rockdale.
She leaves behind many faithful, God-loving godchildren. One of her greatest honors was standing beside each of you as you accepted God’s love.
As we mourn the tremendous loss of such an impactful soul, her celebration of life and eternal peace has now begun -- a glorious time, a homecoming to everlasting joy. It is the moment she spoke of, prayed for and believed in with unwavering faith. She is now home, rejoicing.
Her pallbearers will be her beloved nephews, each of whom held a special and cherished place in her heart. She loved them dearly and took great pride in the men they became.
