Jungman leads 2021’s list of The Tribune’s Top 10 sports stories
County saw an Olympian, a world-class cowboy, UIL state qualifiers in various sports in 2021
CALDWELL’S PHILLIP Jungman competing at the Tokyo Olympics topped this year’s list of sports stories for Burleson County.

THE LADY HORNETS FINISHED the 2021 season as the Class 3A’s third place team in the state. The team’s accomplishment landed them at Number 4 on the Top 10 sports stories list for 2021.
EMMA KOVASOVIC HANDS THE BATON off to Xadria Martin during the UIL Class 2A State Track & Field Meet. The Somerville girls’ relay team of Kovasovic, X. Martin, Ra’Maya Carter and Camia Martin made Somerville sports history as the first girls relay team to qualify for the state meet -- qualifying on the 4x200-meter and 4x100-meter relays.
IN JUST ITS FIRST YEAR TO COMPETE, the Somerville powerlifting team had two members qualify for the Texas High School Powerlifting Association (THSPA) State Meet -- Herschel Conway and Verkobe Woodberry. Woodberry placed third in his weight class at the state meet.
When we look back on 2021, many will view it as the first step toward normalcy after sports went dark in 2020.
