Funeral services for Zack “Jack” Pennington, 78, of Houston, are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 11, 2022, at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Houston.
A graveside service will be held on Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. in the Giddings Memorial Park. Military honors will be provided by Giddings American Legion York Post 276.
Zack Nimitz Pennington was born on June 22, 1944, in Clay, Texas, to O.P. Pennington and Mabel (Coleman) Pennington.
After graduating from Snook High School, he attended Blinn College
on a basketball scholarship.
He joined the U.S. Army Reserves in December of 1964 and was called up for active service in June of 1968 during the Vietnam War. Jack received his honorable discharge in August 1970 from Fort Riley, Kansas.
Jack married the love of his life, Lounell Matthijetz, on June 18, 1966, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Old Dime Box, Texas. They were blessed with three children and five grandchildren.
He continued his education at the University of Houston and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Technology.
Jack worked in the commercial construction management field as an electrical estimator.
His employment took him from Houston to Saudi Arabia, New York City, and the Washington, D.C. area before retiring from Jacobs Engineering in 2013 in Houston.
Jack’s passions were basketball (All State Team in 1962), fishing, golf and all things Elvis.
He was baptized and confirmed as an adult by Reverend L. Boriack at Trinity Lutheran Church in Old Dime Box.
Above all, he was a man of faith and family.
Jack passed away the morning of Tuesday, November 1, 2022, at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Hospital in Houston, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, O.P. and Mabel Pennington; sisters, Margie Clayton, Louise Cozzy, Ruth Cozzy, Jean Franks, and Frances Wessinger; brothers, O.P. Pennington Jr., William “Dee” Pennington, James Pennington, John Pennington and Thomas “Mac” Pennington.
Jack is survived by his wife, Lounell Pennington of Houston; three children, Scott Pennington of Houston, David Pennington of Houston, and Kristen (Jason) Leavitt of Maryland; five grandchildren, Zachary Pennington and Meghan Pennington of South Carolina, Allison Pennington of Abilene, and Charlotte Leavitt and Jack Leavitt of Maryland; one brother, Larry (Gloria) Pennington of College Station; one sister, Jolynn Turner of Caldwell; sister-in-law, Eunice Hobratschk of Giddings; brother-inlaw, Marvin (Charlyn) Matthijets of Loebau; and many nephews, nieces and friends.
