Hughes ties for win in Round 9 at NFR

Caldwell’s Westyn Hughes and Decatur’s Tuf Cooper tied for first in Round 9 of the 2023 National Finals Rodeo in Tie-Down Roping on Friday, Dec. 15, at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Each had a time of 7.1 seconds, each earning $27,487. CalfRoping.

Snook finishes 2-1 at Koppers Tourney, gets 3rd

The Snook Bluejays finished 2-1 at the Koppers Tournament last week in Somerville for a third-place finish and improved to 6-6 overall. It was a good week for Snook, who also defeated Milano 51-39 on Dec. 12 in Milano. At the tournament, Snook opened with a 49-41 win on Friday, Dec.

Somerville wins two at Centerville Tournament

The Somerville Yeguas improved to 10-4 overall with a 2-2 finish last week at the Centerville Tournament. Somerville opened with a 60-21 win over Centerville JV and a 78-30 win over Buffalo JV before falling to Crockett 70-48 and Dawson 52-51.

Lady Jays’ clutch play in 2nd half results in win over Lady Hornets

The Lady Jays were 2-0 last week, ending their week with a 28-25 win over Caldwell. Both teams struggle offensively in the first quarter -- with Caldwell’s Ireland Morgan scoring two baskets for four of the Lady Hornets’ six point in the frame.

Caldwell goes 2-2 at Centerville Tourney

The Caldwell Hornets finished 2-2 at the Centerville Tournament last week, taking second place in the silver bracket. The Hornets defeated Mildred 63-51 in game one and lost to Crockett 60-46 on Thursday, Dec. 7, and then defeated Trinity 53-41 and lost to Mildred 56-40 on Friday, Dec. 8.

Howe named to Academic All-State

Somerville’s Barrett Howe was named to the Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA) 2023-2024 Acacdemic All-State Football Team. Howe was a First Team selection.

Hughes’ NFR update

Caldwell’s Westyn Hughes has placed in the Top 6 in all but the second round at the National Finals Rodeo in Tie-Down Roping. The NFR began Dec. 7 and will continue until Dec. 16 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Hughes’ best round was Round 1 where he tied for third with Ty Harris with a time of 8.
