Marcelina Orozco Maldonado, lovingly known as Mom, Grandma and Tita, entered into eternal rest at the age of 93 at her home on Thursday, September 17, 2026 surrounded by the love and prayers that had defined her entire life. While her family grieves her absence, they find comfort in knowing she has been reunited with her beloved husband, Francisco “Frank” Maldonado, her daughter, Veronica, her son, Mark, and the many loved ones who welcomed her home.
Marcelina was born in Gay Hill, on April 12, 1933, and often joked that she was actually born “in the middle of the lake” because the home where she was born now rests beneath what eventually became the lake. It was one of many family stories she carried and lovingly shared throughout her life.
Raised as one of 12 siblings, Marcelina learned early that family and faith were life’s greatest treasures. Those values never left her. They shaped the wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend she became, and they remained at the center of everything she did. Family was not simply important to Marcelina -- it was her life’s work.
She knew the stories, the relationships and the family history that connected generations together. If someone had a question about the Orozco or Ortega families, there was one person they called. She was the keeper of names, stories, memories and traditions.
If there is one thing her family will always remember, it is that no one left Marcelina’s presence hungry. Not physically. Not mentally. And most importantly, not spiritually. Her door was always open and her table always had room for one more. Whether offering a meal, a prayer, advice or simply her presence, she had a remarkable way of giving people exactly what they needed.
Everything in Marcelina’s life began and ended with her faith in God. Prayer was not simply a habit for her. It was as natural as breathing. She prayed the rosary faithfully every day and rarely missed Mass. When age and health no longer allowed her to attend in person, she never missed a service, faithfully participating from home.
Faith was the foundation of Marcelina’s life. Caring for others was how she put that faith into action. She spent much of her life tending to the needs of those she loved. She stood beside her family through sickness, loss and uncertainty, walking with her son Stephen through his cancer journey and caring tirelessly for Frank through his own cancer treatments, recovery and later after his stroke. She never saw caregiving as a burden. To her, it was an act of love. Whether offering a warm meal, a listening ear, a prayer or unwavering support, she gave of herself freely and never hesitated when someone needed her.
Many of us called her when life stopped making sense. When troubles seemed impossible to understand or burdens too heavy to carry, she always seemed to come back to the same simple advice: “Pray. God listens.” For all her strength, one of Marcelina’s greatest joys was dancing.
She loved dancing with Frank and treasured the many dances she shared with her brothers and sisters throughout the years. She loved the music, the laughter and the togetherness that came with those moments.
In the months leading up to her passing, she often spoke about and dreamed of seeing Frank again. More than once, she talked about dancing with him. Those dreams brought her peace and comfort as she prepared for her journey home.
While many will remember her joyful spirit, those closest to Marcelina will also remember the grace with which she carried life’s burdens. Through every trial she faced, Marcelina lived with remarkable grace. She taught her family that grace means choosing forgiveness when you have every reason to be bitter. Though she experienced heartbreak, loss and hardship, she never allowed those experiences to harden her heart. Instead, she met each challenge with faith, compassion and prayer.
When we think about her now, it is hard to imagine her slowly climbing heaven’s stairway. The truth is she took the expressway and flew straight there because she spent her entire life preparing for that reunion through a life of faith, prayer and service to others.
We imagine her welcomed by God, embraced by Frank, reunited with Veronica and Markandsurroundedbythe family and friends she had missed for so long. We know the music started playing soon after she arrived and that she was finally able to share that long-awaited dance with the love of her life once again.
She was immensely proud of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. The seeds she planted, seeds of faith, love, determination, acceptance, generosity and grace, continue to grow in them and everyone whowasblessedtoknowher. Her legacy is not measured only in the generations she leaves behind, but in the faith she shared, the prayers she offered, and the countless lives she quietly touched.And long after her voice has grown quiet, her family will continue to hear the words that guided so many of us through life’s storms.
“Pray. God listens.” Marcelina is preceded in death by her parents, Gonzalo and Josefa Orozco; husband, Francisco G. Maldonado; daughter, Veronica Maldonado; son, Mark Maldonado; five sisters, Marcos Vega (Crescencio), Atanacia Orozco, Guadalupe Arredondo (Santiago), Maria Robledo (Benino), Domitilia Portales (David); four brothers, George Orozco (Lucia) Lorenzo Orozco (Juanita),Abraham Orozco (Aurelia), Benino Orozco (Rosa) and sister-in-law, Clementine Orozco.
She leaves behind to honor her memory sons, Frank Maldonado (Cynthia), John Maldonado, Sr. (Paula), Stephen Maldonado, Sr. (Sandra); daughter, Theresa Perez (Ramon); brother, Mike Orozco; sister Phyllis Garcia (David); grandchildren, Shandala Lewis (Charles), Kyle Maldonado (Megan), Morgan Maldonado, Alyssa Johnson (Jeremy), John Maldonado, Jr. (Lauren), Joshua Maldonado (Dini), Ramon Perez III, Timothy Perez (Breanna) Stephen Maldonado, Jr. (Kristin), Savanah Sanchez (Robert), Sebastian Maldonado, Victoria Ramirez (James), Charles Perez; great-grandchildren, Cheyenne Lewis, Jackson Maldonado, Jordan Maldonado, Sage Maldonado, Rowan Maldonado, Kyson Maldonado, Ethan Johnson, Emily Johnson, Brendon Maldonado(Callie), Ariana Maldonado(A.J.
