LYNNE MATCEK

Lynne Matcek, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away at her home early Wednesday morning, July 3, 2019.

Lynne Camilla Carlton Matcek was born on July 20, 1938, in Covington, Ky., and was adopted by Hugh and Marjorie Carlton from the Methodist Children’s Home in Jacksonville, Fla., in 1942.

She graduated from Summerlin Institute (High School), Bartow, Fla., in 1956, and received a BS in Education Science from Erskine College, Due West, S.C., in 1960. She later received a Master’s degree in Education from the University of Houston. She was an elementary teacher and taught third grade at Deer Park Elementary for 28 years, most of those years in the same classroom.

Lynne married Gable Matcek of Caldwell in 1962, and they made their home in Pasadena, Texas. Three sons were born to this union: Trevin, Thane, and Tyron. Lynne, Gable (and sons) retired to Caldwell in 1989.

She was an active member of the Burleson County Lions Club and served as secretary and treasurer for many years, receiving the Melvin Jones Fellow Award for her lengthy membership and service.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Caldwell, a member of its congregational and handbell choir. Lynne served as secretary in the church office for several years and was very giving of her time with activities and functions of the church. At dinners, luncheons, and other gatherings at the church, she was the first to arrive to assist and the last to leave.

Lynne was an avid bridge player and a member of several local clubs. So many of these clubs met at the Mad Hatter, where she was famous for scoring “first.”

Another hobby was her love and expertise in sewing and quilting, and she was a longtime member of the Creative Memories Quilt Guild of Caldwell. Her collection of sewing and quilting machines, cutters, special rulers, and yards and yards of material for every quilting occasion, necessitated a separate “Lynne’s Quilting Cottage” next to their home.

She enjoyed a special relationship with animals, cats being her favorite, and was insistent that each had a unique name. Her granddaughter, Ayla Matcek, helped name her most recent cat, “Pickles.”

Lynne was preceded in death by her parents, Hugh and Marjorie Carlton, of Bartow, Fla.

Lynne is survived by her husband, Gable; three sons, two daughters-in-law, and five grandchildren, Trevin of Los Angeles, Calif., Thane and wife, Autumn, and their children, Ayla and Sayer of Round Rock, Texas, and Tyron and wife, Rachel, and their children, Lillian, Tyron Jr., and Trent of Caldwell; her brother, Glenn Carlton and wife, Jean of Brandon, Fla.; her sister, Faith Ward of Caldwell; her brother-in-law, Clinton Matcek of College Station; and many, many, nephews and nieces. Lynne was very proud of her grandchildren who affectionately called her “Me Me.”

Services were held on Wednesday, July 10, 2019, at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Caldwell, with burial following at Caldwell Masonic Cemetery.

Remembrances may be made to The First United Methodist Church of Caldwell and to Hospice Brazos Valley.
