Somerv ille High School recently announced its 2023 Homecoming Court. The Homecoming Queen and King will be announced during the Somerville’s football game at 7 p.m. this Friday, Oct. 13, at The Rock. This year ’s queen hopefuls are Wendy Perez, Bryanna Surovik, Alazia Vela and Destiny Vela.

BAD WEEKEND -- What a difference a week can make. And not in a good way. Real bad or real good. Kind of like rain or shine. Last week I talked about how the Longhorns, Aggies, Texans, and Cowboys all won their games. But this week, it was just the opposite, with all four teams losing.

CHS JV volleyball beats Achieve

Last Friday, the Lady Hornet JV volleball team traveled to Austin, beating Achieve High in straight sets 25-16, 25-15. Individual leaders for Caldwell were: Adeline Hicks, four aces; Hannarea Clark, two kills; Makayla Jantzen, two digs.

The Lady Hornet freshman volleyball team fell to Smithville 23-25, 14-25 last Tuesday on the road. Individua stats included: Fawn McDaniel, two aces, three kills; Maddy Faust, three kills, 14 digs; Lucy Ferguson, five kills; Kamryn Hill, two aces, one kill, 12 digs.

All three area cross country teams ran in Saturday’s Yegua Invitational at Overlook Park. And, in the boys varsity race, Caldwell’s Dylan Chapman and Spencer Ellis finished second and fourth, with Snook’s Ethan Janac placing third.

After being 4-0 in district, the Lady Hornets’ winning ways came to a halt last week as they had their toughest week in district play -- playing the 4-1 Taylor and 5-0 Giddings and winding up on the losing end in both matches.

The Somerville Yeguas are getting closer and closer to a win. The Yeguas, rallying from a 29-7 deficit in the fourth quarter, put together two scoring drives and recovered a pair of onside kicks in the final minutes and were driving for what could have been the tying score.

Lady Jays fall to 2 Top 25 2A teams

Last week, the Lady Jays had two district matches on the schedule, and both were against Top 25 teams in Class 2A. On Tuesday, Sept. 26, Snook traveled to Number 21 Mumford, falling to the Lady Mustangs 15-25, 14-25, 21-25.
