Hornets lose at Giddings, at home to Smithville

The Caldwell Hornets lost to Giddings 62-23 on Feb. 7 in Giddings and to Smithville 43-38 at home on Friday. Against Giddings, Harrison Novak and Grant McManus led the scoring with 7 points each, followed by Preston Supak with 6 and Delvin Morris, 2.

CALDWELL’S DELVIN MORRIS RECENTLY signed his letter of intent to play football for the University of Akron in Ohio, celebrating along with family, friends and coaches.

SUPER BOWL 57 -- It was a perfect night for championship football in Glendale, Arizona at least until Rihanna and the halftime show smoked up the stadium. They should have been renting out oxygen masks instead of binoculars after that.

Snook falls to Mumford 76-43, defeats Normangee 39-33

The Snook Bluejays held on to their fourth place district slot with a 39-33 road win on Saturday against Normangee. Snook had lost 76-43 to first place Mumford at home on Friday and needed the Normangee win to stay alive for the playoffs.

The Caldwell Hornets battled Manor New Tech last Saturday in a close 60-56 home loss, with Tech hitting some critical free throws late in the game as the Hornets were forced to foul.

Lady Hornets host annual alumni softball game

The Lady Hornet softball team hosted its annual alumni scrimmage last Saturday morning with many former Lady Hornet players proving “they still got it.” Former Caldwell pitcher Mercede Rodriguez started on the mound for the alumni squad, striking out several current LadyHornets.

Hughes wins 2023 FWSSR Tie-Down title

Last Saturday, Caldwell’s Westyn Hughes won the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo (FWSSR) ProRodeo Tournament in Tie-Down Roping, with his tournament finals time of 7.4 seconds, earning him $20,000 in the finals. Tuf Cooper placed second in the finals with a time of 7.

Yeguas defeat Iola, Burton to improve to 5-2 in district

The Somerville Yeguas got two big district wins last week to keep their playoff hopes alive -- a 50-44 home win over Iola on Friday, Feb. 3, and an 80-37 road win over Burton on Saturday, Feb. 4.

As the end of the district season draws near, the Lady Yeguas had a rough week last week -- losing to Burton on the road last Tuesday and Iola at home last Friday. Burton put on a scoring clinic last Tuesday night, winning 97-27. Destiny Vela led Somerville in scoring with nine points.

In a 15-point showing by freshman Tyniah Johnson, the Lady Hornets easily beat Manor New Tech on the road Saturday 47-8. Saturday’s game was a makeup from Tuesday’s postponed game due to the icy weather.
