SEVERAL HORNET FOOTBALL PLAYERS received awards at the recent Caldwell High School Fall Sports Awards Banquet. Award winners included: Jim Jackson (DL) and Lucas Peel (OL), Lion’s Club Lineman Award; Braxton Smith, Hornet Award; Justin Balcar, Charlie Krueger Most Competitive Award; Carson Parker, Carl Esparza Award for Courage; Delvin Morris, MVP; Conor Lee (Def) and Coy Becka (Off), Lion’s Club Back of the Year.

Caldwell starts slow, falls to La Grange 46-30

The Caldwell Hornets had a slow start last Friday against La Grange and were unable to rally in a 46-30 home loss. Caldwell trailed 12-1 in the first quarter and 24-9 at halftime before settling down with some good defensive play in the second half.

CLOSE PREDICTION -- I picked the Philadelphia Eagles to whip up on the San Francisco 49ers by a score of 31-17, and darn nearly got the final score of 31-7 exactly right. The only problem is the 49ers didn’t show up. Only able to score a single touchdown, they may as well have stayed home.

Snook offense struggles in losses to Mumford, Iola

The Snook Bluejays lost two district games last week, falling to far behind early in a road game at Mumford on Jan. 17 and then surrendering a halftime lead as Iola rallied to win last Friday in Snook.

Caldwell’s Connor Hughson and Waylon Chapman placed second inABoys Doubles at last week’s Bastrop Winter Cup. There were 24 schools competing in the tournament, ranging from Class 2A-6A. The duo beat Cruz and Deng from Glenn 8-2, and then defeated Poston and Reutter of Bastrop 8-4.

The Lady Hornets added two more district wins last week at home, beating Smithville and Austin Achieve. Caldwell had a dominating 30-13 halftime lead, and Smithville chipped away at the lead during the second half. But, the Lady Hornets found a way to hold on for the win.

Lady Jays lose district games to Mumford, Iola

The Lady Jays had a rough time last week, losing two district games to go 0-5 in the first round of District 26-2A. Snook was scheduled to start Round 2 on Tuesday, Jan. 24, at home against county rival Somerville.

Against Normangee last Friday, Carter had a double-double -- leading Somerville in scoring with 22 points and in rebounds with 10. She also had four steals in the game.
