The Caldwell Hornet tennis team lost its season opener on Aug. 11 to Bastrop on the road 8-11. Some of the matches played did not count towards the final team scores. In boys’ singles: * Waylon Chapman defeated Caleb Cadena 8-2. * Connor Hughson beat Aloe Garcia 8-4.

Caldwell facing tough schedule with young team

The Caldwell Hornets are welcoming some talented newcomers this year, and they will relay heavily on those younger players during a tough schedule. The Hornets return four offensive and three defensive starters and 12 lettermen from 2021, so the younger players will get their chance.

Last week, the Lady Jays traveled to Leon to play in the annual Leon Volleyball Tournament. On Thursday, Snook played three matches, with Snook losing the first of three to Livingston 10-25, 13-25. Alexis Macik, Payton Sodolak and Karla Lara each had two kills to lead the Snook offense.

The Somerville Yeguas scored on a touchdown pass in their Friday, Aug. 19, scrimmage at home with Rosehill Christian School and then fell 3-0 in the live half. The Yeguas scored on a third-and-eight pass play from Ian Teague to D.J. Bryant in the regular portion of the scrimmage for a 1-0 lead.

The Caldwell Hornets scored on a TD pass in the live half portion of their Thursday, Aug. 18, home scrimmage with Navasota but fell 30-6. The teams played to a scoreless tie in the regular scrimmage prior to the live half.
