Growing conditions split by rain with improved moisture, lingering drought

Growing conditions for summer crops are a mixed bag of results based on rainfall over the past 90 days, according to Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service experts.While soil moisture conditions have improved for much of the state, too much of a good thing, like rain, can also bring problems.

Somerville approves Welch Park sublease

The Somerville City Council has approved renewing its sublease with Welch Park Enterprises Inc., for up to 10 years.However, the sublease, contingent on the city’s lease for Welch Park with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, could be shorter if the Corps’ lease with the city is shorter than 10 years.

Caldwell purchases Chmelar property for $700k

The Caldwell City Council, on Tuesday, June 30, approved a resolution authorizing Mayor John Rychlik to enter into a purchase and sales agreement for a 10.33 acre property on State Highway 36, previously owned by Chmelar & Thompson Investments, for $700,000.

Two die in separate July 2 accidents

In a tragic day spanning just eight hours, Burleson County experienced two traffic fatalities on Thursday, July 2, in separate, unrelated accidents, one a two-car crash on F.M. 60 near F.M. 50 and the other involving an ATV rollover at Birch Creek Forest Subdivision.

Deputies investigate 3 oil well site thefts

Burleson County sheriff ’s deputies are investigating three cases of major damage and theft of wiring at oil well sites last week on County Roads 324, 328 and 315.Burleson County Sheriff Bill Rios said the cases are being investigated as felony thefts and as criminal mischief.
