Hornets beat Florence, Academy, get to 3-2

The Caldwell Hornets broke out of a close game with two big runs in the top of the sixth to defeat Florence 16-7 on March 22 and then played error-free in a 4-1 home win last Friday over Little River-Academy. Caldwell improved to 9-9 overall and 3-2 in district play.

Caldwell’s Kyleigh Gomez drove in seven runs on three hits to lead the Lady Hornet’s to a lopsided 20-3 victory over Florence last Tuesday on the road. In the first inning, Gomez drove in two runs on a home run -- her first pitch at bat -- a line drive over the center field wall.

CJHS, SJHS compete at Caldwell Junior High Relays

The eighth-grade boys’ team from Caldwell finished second at last week’s Caldwell Junior High Relays with a score of 146. Giddings won the team title with 208 points, while Somerville finished in fifth with 54. The Caldwell eighthgrade girls were third in the team standings with 162.

Mumford dominates in 16-4, 15-2 wins over SHS

The Somerville Yeguas fell to Mumford in two games last week -- 16-4 on Tuesday, March 22, in Mumford and 15-2 on Friday in Somerville. In game one, Mumford scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning, and 10 runs in the bottom of the third.

Lady Yeguas fall to Normangee 24-8

Last Wednesday, March 23, Somerville hosted Normangee in a high-scoring affair, losing to the Lady Panthers 24-8. After taking a 7-1 lead in the first two innings, Somerville watched the Lady Panther offense come alive while the Lady Panther defense shut down the Lady Yeguas.

Snook falls to Fayetteville 11-1, 15-5 in doubleheader

The Snook Bluejays lost a district doubleheader to Fayetteville 11-1 and 15-5 last Tuesday, March 22, in Snook. In game one, Snook surrendered three runs in the top of the third inning and seven in the top of the fourth before scoring their lone run in the bottom of the fifth.

Caldwell Olympian Phillip Jungman had a good World Cup showing in Nicosia, Cypress, last week. Last Wednesday, Jungman and his teammate Austen Smith earned a bronze medal in the Mixed Team Skeet event.

Nine area girls basketball players were named to the District 26-2A All-District Team -- led by Somerville’s Ra’Maya Carter being named Defensive MVP for the 2021- 2022 season. Carter was the Lady Yeguas’ leading scorer this season and a dominant player on defense.

Soccer to take on Sealy in bi-district

For the first time in Caldwell High School soccer history, the Hornets are headed to the playoffs. Caldwell finished the season in third place in District 19-4A with a season record of 9-7- 3 and a district record of 6-6. Caldwell will take on Sealy in a bi-district match-up this Thursday at 6 p.
