Snook and Caldwell powerlifters performed well at the Viking Invitational Powerlifting Meet last Saturday at Bryan High School. In the girls’ team standings, Snook finished in second place with 25 points, behind Elgin with 59 points. Caldwell was third with 19 points.

Somerville girl powerlifter Bryanna Surovik won the 181-pound weight class at the Altair Rice Swamp Strength Powerlifting Meet on Jan. 19. She had a total lift weight of 700 pounds -- 265 pounds in the squat, 150 in the bench press and 285 in the dead lift.

Last week, the Lady Hornets moved into second place in District 19-3A with a 6-2 district record, and 18-6 overall with wins over Rogers and Lexington. Little River Academy is in first place, currently undefeated in district play and 21-7 overall.

The Caldwell Hornets made their shots count at the free throw line in a 57-48 road win over Lexington last Friday. The Hornets hit 14-24 for 58 percent and built leads of 28-16 at halftime and 38-26 in the third. Caldwell improved to 13-14 overall and 3-3 in district play.

THE CALDWELL JUNIOR VARSITY tennis team competed in the Bastrop Winter Cup on Wednesday, Jan. 19. Bryan Martinez and Gabe Pipes placed second in boys doubles. Karly Fritsche placed fourth in girls singles. Kori Archer and Jordan Perkkio placed third in girls doubles.

The Lady Yeguas were 1-1 in district play last week, beating Burton at home and falling to Mumford on the road. Last Tuesday, Somerville hosted Burton, winning 59-44. Somerville jumped out to an early 16-11 lead by the end of the first quarter, however Burton fought back to lead at halftime 26-23.

Snook holds on for 49-48 victory at Normangee

The Snook Bluejays won a close one 49-48 last Friday at Normangee, holding off a late Panther comeback. Snook led 13-8 in the first quarter and 24-15 at halftime, but Normangee cut into the lead, trailing just 34-30 after the third quarter and outscored Snook 18-15 in the fourth.

VFW Patriotic Art Contest is accepting submissions

The Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest sponsored by the VFW Auxiliary is accepting submissions for this year. The deadline for entry is March 31. Entries must be submitted to a sponsoring local VFW Auxiliary. Entries submitted to VFW Auxiliary National Headquarters will be returned.

GIRLS SCOUT TROOPS 1136 and 32300 learned about the importance of safety from Kaleb Hairston with the City of Caldwell Police Department. The troops also made Valentine’s cards for the Senior Citizen Center and learned about the Poison Control Center.
