Match the Promise applications due soon

The deadline to apply for Texas Match the Promise Foundation scholarship awards is Dec. 31. The Match the Promise Foundation, in cooperation with the Texas Comptroller’s office, offers competitive matching scholarships to encourage Texas families to save for college.

Hornets rally in 2nd half to defeat Hearne

The Caldwell Hornets rallied in the second half to defeat Hearne 46-38 on Monday, Dec. 20, in Caldwell in the final game before the Christmas break. The Hornets, who fell to Sealy 66-51 last Friday at home and to Taylor 49-40 on Dec. 14, in Taylor, improved to 8-9 overall.

Caldwell’s Westyn Hughes finished the 2021 Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) season ranked third in the world in Tie-Down Roping after placing fourth in the National Finals Rodeo (NFR).

Arredondo, Mota named to Academic All-State Volleyball

Snook seniors Paola Arredondo and Frida Mota were recently named to the Texas Girls Coaches Association (TGCA) Academic All-State Team. To be nominated to the team, one must: * Be a graduating senior. * Have an overall GPA average of 94 or above for grades 9-11.

Eleven area football players -- six from Caldwell, two from Snook and three from Somerville were recently named to the 2021 Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA) Academic All-State Football Team.

Lady Hornets go undefeated at Dime Box Tournament

The Lady Hornets are sitting at 12-3 to start their District 19-3A run on Tuesday, Dec. 14, at Rogers -- after going undefeated at the Dime Box Girls Basketball Tournament.

CAMIA MARTIN SCORED 12 points against Thrall to lead the Somerville offense to a 49-35 win last Friday night at home.

Lady Yeguas improve to 7-1

Even without Somerville’s top scorer, the Lady Yeguas have been able to continue to win -- beating Thrall last Friday 49-35. Ra’Maya Carter who has been averaging 18.2 points per game has been out due to an injury.

Hornets win one of four at Thorndale Tournament

The Caldwell Hornets won one of four games at the Thorndale Tournament last weekend. Caldwell fell to Smithville 62-47 and to Lago Vista 53-36 on Friday, Dec. 10, rallied in the second half to defeat Austin Navarro 50-42 on Saturday, Dec. 11, and then fell to Gateway Prep 68-40.

Snook falls to Flatonia 80-58

The Snook Bluejays fell to Flatonia 80-58 last Tuesday, Dec. 7, in Flatonia. Dekendrick Dawson led the scoring for the Bluejays with 22 points, followed by Lance Lara with 15. Snook Head Coach Chris London said his team started slow in the first half but picked up the pace in the second half.

Lady Jays go 1-2 at Dime Box Tourney

The Lady Jays were 1-2 at the Dime Box Tournament last week, beating Round Top-Carmine before falling to Caldwell and Hempstead. Against RTC, Snook led at halftime and held on for a 36-25 win. Mackenzie Groce was Snook’s top scorer with 16 points.
